Ok so you're ready to take the plunge and get a tattoo. So, the big question is "Where can I go to get the best design?" Well, there are lots of places to get a great tattoo. We have put together a comprehensive directory of Tattoo shops, Tattoo Artists, Body Piercing shops and more. Search our nationwide directory to find the best Tattoo shop in your area.

A great tattoo shop will have a tattoo book of their work available. In addition to looking through their selection of tattoos in their portfolio, each tattoo shop should have their state certification displayed prominently.

Also, look for qualities like cleanliness and their policy on new needles. Many shops will post their artist's hepatitis immunization records. Before you decide on a shop, hang out for awhile and watch them work. Be sure that all ink, needles, and supplies are stored separately and that they are always new.

Black Henna: Lies, Burns and Scars
The picture you see here is the scarring left behind from black henna burns. A forum member posted it and asked if having a reaction to henna means she would also have a reaction to tattoo ink. Feel free to jump in and join that discussion if you have any advice or personal experiences to share.

Every year, I see countless news reports about this and still there are business proprietors pushing this product, even going so far as telling their clients that it's better than regular henna and perfectly safe. This is a lie - natural henna is a powder derived from a plant and, in its purest form, causes virtually no allergic reactions. Black henna, however, is natural henna that has been altered by adding a dangerous, toxic chemical known as PPD - it's often found in black hair dyes and is typically safe to use on the hair but is widely known to cause severe allergic reactions when it comes in contact with skin. Black henna or any product containing PPD should not be used on the skin, ever.

It's Great Being Tattooed Because...
The other day I was loading groceries into the back of our SUV, when my daughter ever-so-helpfully closed the hatchback, not realizing that half of my body was still in the path of the descending door. As I grimaced in pain I said, "That's gonna bruise!" So I looked in the mirror to see how bad it was, and my tattoo actually camouflaged the purple and green haze I could just see at the top of my shoulder. I guess that's one advantage to being inked! So, then I started thinking of other great reasons to be tattooed, and here's a few I came up with:
  • They're great conversation starters (Did that hurt? My sister's boyfriend's cousin's son does tattoos.)
  • People assume you're tough (Don't mess with me, I have Hello Kitty tattooed on my ass!)
  • They scare religious zealots (No point preaching to her, she's in the devil's hands now.)
  • They attract adorable little kids (Did you get in trouble for drawing all over yourself like that?)
  • They're permanent memorabilia (I got this one the day my ex told me he'd divorce me if I got another tattoo.)

Got another reason it's great being tattooed? Add your comments below! :)

Movie Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Oftentimes, when you see a film that's based on a favorite book, the results are disappointing. They cut out a lot of important details, take certain liberties with the plot lines, choose horrible actors, and basically mutilate something you love in print. I'm happy to say that this was not the case with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Read my full review to find out more.
